Helen and Allen met in the Wollaston neighborhood of Quincy, Massachusetts, their home town, in the late 1950s. She was born in and lived in Medford, Massachusetts with her parents, Bill and Laura Kolb, and her two older sisters. The family had moved to Wollaston a few years earlier. Allen was born in Quincy and lived in Wollaston with his parents, Sylvia and Ed Forrest and his two younger brothers. Helen attended North Quincy High School and Allen attended Quincy High School prior to enlisting in the United States Navy. Allen went on to a twenty-year career in the Navy and Helen followed him to assignments in Norfolk, Virginia, San Diego, California, and Jacksonville Beach, Florida. They have lived in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, ever since. They have the good fortune of having most of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren living nearby.
